Açai – A kiteboarder’s best friend?

My first encounter with Açai was on Facebook when some of the Pro Kiteboarders posted a photo of an Açai breakfast somewhere in Brazil. At that time I often felt tired and lacking energy. As I am kiting a lot I figured I might have to change something in my nutrition. So I looked up Açai. The Açai berry is an inch-long reddish, purple fruit. It comes from the Açai palm tree, which is native to Central and South America. The healthful superfood contains omega fatty acids, dietary fiber and phytosterols, which support the immune system. Açai is also rich in antioxidants which may help prevent diseases caused by oxidative stress such as heart disease and cancer.

I ordered the organic freeze dried Açai powder by Sambazon. After having two scoops a day for about 2 weeks blended with yogurt and a banana, I did feel I have more energy. I would have loved to get the frozen smoothie packs instead because that is what they use in Brazil for their morning or lunch Açai bowls (Açai with Banana, Granola and Honey = “Açai na tigela”). But the smoothie packs wouldn’t have survived on their way to Venezuela. Having been to Brazil now I felt even more in love with Açai. It’s addicting, super yummy and I just feel it makes me a stronger kiteboarder.
