My August Getaway – Ilha do Guajiru, Brazil!

After the PKRA in Germany I wanted to go somewhere to train and to unwind at the same time. I thought of Egypt as it’s cheap and most kitespots have perfect conditions for Freestyle. But Paul wasn’t too crazy about me going alone to Egypt so we decided that Brazil would be a good choice. We have already been once in Ilha do Guajiru and I absolutely love it. Last year we stayed at Casa Suica and I couldn’t imagine a better place to be. It’s the perfect place if you want to relax, listen to the wind and wake up with a view to the lagoon. Casa Suica is an Eco Resort so don’t expect TV or A/C . It’s quiet and relaxing. Gianluca and Sara are super friendly and they have become dear friends. They make a fantastic breakfast. I usually had fruits and Acai (check out my article about Acai from last year 😉 ) and Gianluca’s pizza and Focaccia for dinner are outstanding.

The wind in Ilha do Guajiru is very strong (I almost exclusively used my 6m Cabrinha Siren kite) and can be gusty. But of all the places in Brazil, Ilha do Guajiru is one of my favorites. Most kitespots in Brazil are crowded, especially the lagoons. Ilha do Guajiru isn’t the perfect kitespot for Freestyle either but it has a special atmosphere that I love. The “town” is quite small but there are some nice options to have a drink and dinner in the evening. The lagoon is big and at least you will always find a spot to do your trick. During low tide you can do a downwinder to the bottom of the lagoon where you’ll find nice flat water. You either find someone to pick you up by car and drive you back to your posada or you kite back upwind in the lagoon or in the ocean. The other option is to drive about 12km upwind and then do a downwinder partly in the ocean and partly in the river which is really nice and I highly recommend it. We missed it last year so I was happy that I was able to do the downwinder this time. Thank you, Ale 😉

downwinder

For the downwinder I joined the Argentinian group that I have become friends of. I don’t think that I have ever met such a big group of kitesurfers that are having so much fun together. This is the way it should always be. After the downwinder I joined them for lunch at another Eco Resort further upwind. Some of the group were doing Yoga. This is my view while not doing yoga (I actually should!!!) but waiting for food and having a Skol beer.

The best place for a drink, dinner and chillout atmosphere is definitely Baraca do Kite, Ale and Mari’s restaurant, bar and posada.

Paul and I got to know them last year when they just opened. They have improved the place a lot and I was super impressed. Good job, guys! If you have dinner at their place, Marian makes a killer mousse de maracuja for dessert.

They have a really cool bar

I had the best Maracuja (passion fruit) Caipiroska at Ale’s bar. I definitely have to try them at home. Thank you for the recipe, Fabian!

Sabrina and Mirko, who were my neighbors at Casa Suica for 2? nights took some photos of me kiting. They left so quickly that I didn’t have the chance to really thank them and to say good-bye. They also took some photos and videos with their DJI Phantom Quadcopter. Pretty cool! Thank you!

Ilha do Guajiru has a special place in my heart. I am so happy that I came back. I have a feeling that it’ll be my yearly getaway now. Thank you everyone for making my time so incredible!
