Writing for KITELIFE Magazine

As you can see, I really enjoy writing. I love writing in English but I really wanted to write something in my mother language – German. So I had the idea of writing an article for the popular German magazine KITELIFE. I wanted to write an article about Kiting in Venezuela, especially in El Yaque, Isla Margarita.

Since Condor Airlines stopped flying here in 2010, international tourism has really taken a battering. It doesn’t really help that the German Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) is warning to come here. And of course the unstable political situation in Venezuela. It was important to me to show the Germans and the rest of the world what a kite paradise we really have here on Isla Margarita. I didn’t know anybody at the KITELIFE magazine. Done by my own efforts, without any help or having special contacts, I got the job on my own and am really proud of that.

The other thing that was really important to me was to give credit to the locals, especially to my friend Mary (Maria Alejandra Gonzales). I remember when I moved here 5 years ago with very little kiting experience and Murray from Margarita Xtreme Kite Center told us how great Mary was and that she was already doing backrolls. Mary for a long time was with no doubt the best kiting girl in El Yaque winning lots of competitions. She also taught many women in El Yaque how to kitesurf so I think she deserves to be described as “the mentor of the kiting women in El Yaque”. Now – five years later – we are doing S-bends, Raley to Blind and other advanced tricks. El Yaque Kitegirls 😉

People asked me to translate the article, I practically just summed it up, however I’ve been asked by the magazine not to do so online until the next issue has been published. So stayed tuned here and I will translate the article and post it online.  If you prefer not to wait, then buy yourself a copy and bring it to me.  I’m happy to translate you the entire text in person 😉

KITELIFE is a great magazine with lots of useful information.

Lastly, I want to thank Alain Galarneau for providing some of the photos for the article and for taking lots of great kiting photos here in El Yaque.
